  • Declaration of state of emergency
  • Natural disasters
  • Homeland security threats
  • Hazardous materials spills
  • Extreme weather/state government closings
  • Radiologic or seismic activity
  • Amber alerts (State Police)

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency  (MEMA) works with local emergency managers, other state agencies, private organizations, and the federal government to identify the extent of a disaster, respond as much as possible to calls for threats to personal safety and health, and maintain order. MEMA is also responsible for authorizing alerts.

At the local level, your fire department, police department, emergency medical services (EMS) provider, public health department, and other local government representatives work together to identify the extent of a disaster, respond as much as possible to calls for threats to personal safety and health, and maintain order. The Massachusetts State Police is responsible for authorizing Amber alerts.

The Executive Office for Health and Human Services (EOHHS) and the Department of Public Health (DPH) are responsible for authorizing bioterrorism or critical health alerts.

When authorized, alerts appear on the Mass.Gov home page and on all executive department agency web pages using Mass.Gov's content management system. Non-executive department agencies may opt in to the Alert system if they wish.

Alerts are graphically designed to catch the eye, provide a brief description of the alert, and link to a page with the full text of the alert and related information.

Preparing for emergencies before they occur can limit the damage caused by the event. We should all prepare now by establishing our own personal preparedness plans, assembling disaster supply kits, and making a family communications plan. Simple worksheets on how to prepare are available at www.ready.gov.
